Writing Wonderful Web Widgets

Toungue twisters aside, desktop widgets are pretty cool. I happened to stumble across Konfabulator today -- an application which runs cross-platform widgets on WindowsXP & MacOS. What is a widget? Well.. not to be vague, but it can be anything you want it to be. Konfabulator allows interaction with WindowsXP programs.. so you could have a widget that sits on your desktop and tells you what your CPU load is at or run a widget that reminds you about important events and reskin or group information important to you into a single widget.

The real power though, is the ability to interact with XML and web pages. Since the widgets are programmed using a combination of XML and JavaScript, it makes the transition much easier for web developers looking to interact with a web application or database. Throw together a widget to monitor server load, or hits to your website, or any number of possibilities. Pretty cool stuff.
