Apple Drops Price Of iPhone By $200

Loyal Apple customers and other early adopters of the iPhone were surprised to learn yesterday that the price of the iPhone was reduced from $599 to $399 -- less than 10 weeks after it was released. Apple is offering $100 credit to the Apple Store for customers who had already purchased an iPhone before the price drop. Most early adopters expect prices of electronics to drop after 6 months, but are willing to pay the premium to be among the elite first few to own the product.

Enjoying that period of being among the first before the price drops and the product reaches the masses is part of the pleasure, Brin and others say. And in much of the tech world, the usual expectation is that six months will pass before there's a major price cut and a year before a next generation of the product usually an improved version appears.
