Lucky SOB Scores A Working Voodoo 5 6000 For $212.

While many of the Voodoo 5 6000's are still going for well over $1000 on eBay, one lucky guy nabbed one for $212.50. There are very few of these cards (3dfx went out of business before any were manufactured for the public), so they've become a collector's item for geeks. The card was advertised as non-working and when tested, the text was garbled and Windows would not boot up correctly, as described in the auction listing. Upon reviewing other pictures of Voodoo 5 6000's, the lucky bidder noticed two capacitors that were on his card and not on the other pictures of working cards. After removing the capacitors, the card worked without a hitch! The capacitors, which act as a temporary storage place for electricity, were likely nixed from the final design, which explains why the capacitors were crossed out in one of the pictures found. So perhaps the capacitors really weren't required in the first place (ie. just ensuring proper power to an area of the card) and gobbled up excessive electricity when all of them were present. Whatever the case, this guy is one lucky SOB! Check out the 3dmark scores and pictures!
